Altec 1589b
A broadcast preamp from the late '70s, the Altec 1589B features two discrete microphone channels with transformer-balanced inputs and that signature Altec grit. Originally designed for paging and PA systems, it’s become a favorite for studio users looking to inject vintage character into their signal chain.
This unit has been recapped and upgraded for modern use:
Dual-channel mic preamp with QTY(2) 15905a input transformers
Full recap and servicing for quiet, reliable operation
IEC power connector added
Balanced 1/4" output for direct studio hookup
The 1589B has loads of gain, a punchy midrange, and a raw edge that makes it great for drums, guitars, and saturated vocals. It’s not clean—it’s character. Simple, sturdy, and full of attitude.
This unit has been fully restored and is in excellent cosmetic condition!
